Do you notice any grinding, squeaking, or vibrating in your vehicle? When was the last time you had your Brakes examined? We all know how important they are, but do you understand the importance of maintaining them?
Brake Pads and Rotors
Your braking system is very complex with lots of essential parts. Two of those are the Brake Pads and Brake Rotors.
The
Brake Pad
works with the Brake Caliper to create friction against the Rotor.
Brake Rotors
spin while the car is moving. The Brake Pad and Caliper rub against the Rotor to create friction that slows down or stops the vehicle.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is a valuable fluid that is often overlooked. It helps your car stop, prevents rust, and lubricates the moving parts in the braking system.
Stopping Your Car
When you push on your brakes, the Brake Fluid travels through the brake lines to the caliper pistons. Then, the pistons apply force to your brake pads and rotors and the car slows down. The harder you press, the more friction between the rotors and the wheel. More friction means a faster and harsher stop.
Preventing Rust and Corrosion
Brake Fluid is very absorbent. Any moisture gets absorbed by the Brake Fluid before it can cause damage to the braking system.
Keeping Your Brake System Lubricated
Brake Fluid reduces wear on the Brake Pads and Calipers.
So be sure you get your Brake Fluid checked and flushed regularly.
The color of your Brake Fluid can help you determine when you need to have it flushed. The darker it gets, the sooner you need to have it changed.
Why are my Brakes squeaking?
There are a few reasons your Brakes could be squeaking. Some common causes are poorly-installed Brake Pads, Calipers, or a stuck foreign object.
Your Brake Pads and Calipers May Have Been Assembled Incorrectly
Unlubricated calipers can get sticky. A sticky caliper can affect your car's braking power and may cause it to "drag" as it rubs against the rotor. This would wear the brake pad down and cause a scraping sound.
It is one of the reasons why Quality Automotive always greases new Brakes.
A Trapped Foreign Object
Brakes can also squeak if there is an object such as a rock or stick lodged somewhere in your Braking System. If this is the case, you may even hear squeaking without pressing the Brakes. Be sure to have the Brakes examined before it ruins your Rotors.
If your Brakes start squeaking, do not ignore it or wait until it becomes a problem. A faulty braking system is very dangerous!
How often should I get my Brakes worked on?
There are too many variables in the lifespan of your brakes to give an accurate timeframe. Highway driving, heavy braking, and more all affect the condition of your Brakes.
At Quality Automotive, we judge by how thin the brake pads are and if there are any lurking issues. Our technicians recommend service when the brake pads have 3-4 MM of life left.
In the photo above, a technician uses a tool to check the brake's condition. This one is, "in the yellow." So it has around 5 MM of life left.
