When was the last time you checked under your vehicle for Rust? With the snow and salt on the roads, now is the time to get proactive.
Here's what you need to know to ward Rust off of your vehicle:
What Causes Rust?
Your vehicle will get rusty when the iron components come in contact with moisture.
Rust is most common in the winter months when there is salt on the road. When your vehicle kicks that salt up into your undercarriage, it begins to create Rust.
If you live near the ocean, the salt in the air can also cause your vehicle to Rust.
Rain, snow, and humidity are also common causes of Rust.
Manufacturers have come a long way in deterring Rust, but there is no way to permanently prevent it. You can delay it though! Some ways to ward off Rust are parking the car inside and washing it regularly.
Some vehicle owners will use an undercoating to help prevent Rust. BUT undercoating only works for new, undriven vehicles. Once driven, you should not apply an undercoat to your car. It will trap the moisture that the vehicle has already encountered. This will cause Rust rather than prevent it.
What Happens When Rust Is Left Unattended
Rust will penetrate through the exterior and weaken the structure if left untreated. Once that happens, the vehicle is dangerous to drive.
If you drive a vehicle with structural damage, you also have to worry about the inner mechanisms. Severe Rust that goes deep enough into your vehicle can stop components from working.
